Gear List

We will be meeting RAIN or SHINE each week, so your child needs to be prepared for all weather conditions. Gear is incredibly important for your child’s experience, so please prepare thoroughly. Let us know if you have any questions as we are happy to help!

Thrift Stores

Thrift stores are fabulous places to acquire gear. The children most often come home quite dirty, and used clothes can add that little extra sense of freedom to letting them “trash” their clothes.

Clothing Suggestions

It is very helpful if you have clothes that are designated just for Nature Connect. Please make sure that the clothes they wear can get dirty or ripped.

Rain Gear

A very good rain suit (coat and pants) and rain boots are an absolute necessity! No umbrellas. Rainy day tip: Keep the rain pants on the outside of the boots, not tucked in. When they are tucked in, water can get in right away when they jump into puddles

On rainy days PLEASE have them come fully prepared. Even if it doesn’t look like rain but it rained the night before or it COULD rain, the best motto is: BE PREPARED. Or, when in doubt, bring all of their rain gear any way. Better to have it, just in case. If a child comes blatantly ill-prepared for the weather, we will do our best with what we have to dress them appropriately. If this is not possible, they will then be sent home. Therefore, they MUST have good rain pants, rain boots and rain coat. Here are two brands we recommend: Oakiwear (see discount code below) and Sofee & Lenee. If you sew, you can get great rain material at a store in Oregon called the Rain Shed (http://www.therainshed.com/fabrics.htm).

Shoes

For our summer camp, we recommend water shoes such as Keens, Tevas, or Chacos. For our academic year programs, we recommend neoprene rainboots.

Fall/Late Spring Clothing Checklist:

–Comfortable clothes that can get really dirty (we recommend synthetic, non-cotton materials that dry quickly)

-Lightweight longsleeves to layer over a short sleeve shirt. Long sleeves are great for sun and bug protection.

– Tall socks

– Pants that can tuck into socks/boots (athletic pants work well)

– Hat and bandanna. These would be great to wet in the creek to keep cool.

– Raincoat & Rainpants – Quality is important. Please test your clothes to see if they are actually waterproof. We don’t want the rain to soak through them. Brands we recommend: Oakiwear (see discount code above) and Sofee & Lenee.

– Shoes – We recommend neoprene boots.

Winter Clothing Checklist:

What to bring each week:

– Daypack/Backpack (one that’s comfortable for your child to wear throughout the day)

– Full Water Bottle – Kid size is best, so it’s not too heavy

– Snack and Lunch – Warm soup in a thermos is really great on cold days! Nutrient dense/low sugar food is best, as we are doing a lot of walking, running, exploring, and playing

– Raincoat & Rainpants (see links above)

– Extra change of clothes in Ziploc bag

– Optional: Journal, Binoculars, Field Guides, Bug Spray, Tick Spray, Sunscreen

– Anything your child needs to be comfortable in the woods

– You may choose to leave an extra bag with us, so you don’t have to pack a new gear bag each week.

Thank you for your cooperation.

This makes your child’s experience and the other children’s experience that much more enjoyable and enables greater outdoor ease and comfort.
